Prepare my heart, Oh Lord
I just had to share this with everyone, it's too cool not to!
Yesterday, I had gone into the Christian bookstore in the mall, just to look around and see what they had in terms of daily devotionals for me to take with me to Europe. I saw a book called Daily Guideposts and picked it up to see what it was all about. It looked great, little stories and scriptures designed to lift spirits and keep the heart and mind focused on God throughout everyday life. The problem was, it was about $30- a little more than I wanted to spend on a book.
But today, I was at Bargain books picking up some books for my little cousin for Christmas. When I was standing in line to check out, I turned around and there was a sign for books on a 99 cent special. One of the books on that shelf was the 2009 version of Daily Guideposts. I thought to myself, "Does it really matter if it doesn't list the right days of the week? There are still 365 days in the year." I decided it didn't matter, and I went ahead and bought it.
About 5 minutes ago (that's how cool I thought this was) I was laying in bed flipping through it, and went to look at January 7th, which is the day my flight for Harlaxton leaves. I would like to share with you what I found there:
"Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall."- Proverbs 16:18 (TLB)
"Years ago I made a list of things I wanted to ride, including a hot-air balloon, a snowmobile, an elephant, a camel, a toboggan, inline skates, a surfboard, a go-cart, a wave runner, an alpine slide, a horse and buggy in New York City's Central Park, and a helicopter. By my midfifties I'd done them all except ride the camel. Then I started a new list that included parasailing, a rickshaw and a train through the Paris to London Chunnel. I'm still dreaming about those. Just having the list makes me feel fit, fun, and full of adventure.
"Not too long ago, my friends invited my friend Jack and I to tour downtown St. Petersburg, FL (our neighboring town) on Segways, those funny looking things on two wheels.
"Perfect, another interesting thing I can add to my list of fun things to ride," I thought. "This will be easy. I'm only 61 and they're all in their mid seventies. I'll run circles around them."
"Well, of the four of us, I was the only one who bumped into a lamp-post, swerved into the grass (3 times), hit a big metal pole, and knocked the Segway into the ground after screeching around in a sandy spot. My body wasn't hurt, but my brash, overconfident feelings sure were.
"Lesson learned? Sometimes I need to slow down, obey the rules, and take it easy in order to get the most out of my life.
Lord, thank You for all the adventures we can have in this glorious world. Help me to enjoy them wisely.
-Patricia Lorenz
Now, the story itself didn't really catch my attention (with the exception of the part about riding the Chunnel between Paris and London, which I will be doing). It was the prayer at the end. Let me repeat it .
"Lord, thank You for all the adventures we can have in this glorious world. Help me to enjoy them wisely."
How appropriate that I should pray that as I'm on a plane about to go enjoy the glorious world He created?
Coincidence? I think not.
I get the feeling He's going to be up to something big while I'm abroad.
